1997 Africa – Europe (Tunisia, Africa to Pantelleria, Italy)

  • Swam non-stop 29 hours 37 minutes and 57 seconds
  • Swam: (80 km) (49.712 miles)
  • Sept. 26th – 27th
  • Swim start time: 2:00 p.m.
  • Water Environment at time of swim: Ocean. High concentration of salt.
  • Most difficult aspects of swim: The jellyfish. The sun. The salt. The water currents. The wind.
  • Range of water temperature: (25 to 27 C ) (77 to 80.6 F)
  • Martin’s Motivation behind the swim: Because seven swimmers before him tried to do this, but did not succeed. Martin felt that it would be good to be the first. He had the question in his mind; why did these previous swimmers not succeed in their attempt? What was so difficult about this swim that they didn’t finish it? This was Martin’s question.
  • Martin’s Goal behind the swim: To reach Pantelleria port from Kheibija, Africa. Martin simply decided to do this. To reach this port. His brain said….”Martin, you can do this!”
  • Accomplished Goal: YES
  • Martin’s Health at end of swim: Terrible sunburn. Exhausted. Severe damage to Martin’s eyes, lips, mouth and nose, as a result of the salt water. In addition, Martin endured the stinging from approximate 50 to 60 bites from Jellyfish. During a portion of the swim, Martin got stung approximately thirty times all at once from jellyfish.
  • Martin lost (5 kg) (11 lbs), during this swim.
